5 Tips for Designing Kid’s Rooms They’ll Love

As a designer and mom of two little girls, I can tell you that some of my most discerning clients are the pint sized ones. They know what they want, and they usually want it now. Balancing your child’s current passions with your home’s overall design aesthetic can be done in a way that keeps everyone happy –  and without redoing it every few years.
Here are some of my top tips for creating fun children’s bedrooms that will grow and adapt with them:

  1. Start with a neutral paint base. If your child is begging for pink or blue, go for it! Just make sure it’s a shade that will stand the test of time (think a dusty blush pink, rather than bubble gum pink).

  2. Make savvy furniture choices. Classic, clean lines are always a good choice. When searching for a crib, look for one that converts to a toddler bed. Some will even convert again to a headboard for a full-sized bed to give you extra longevity. Or get ready for future sleepovers by purchasing two twin beds.

3. A low commitment way to make a big design impact is with removable wall decals and murals. We love using them for accent walls. And don’t forget about the fifth wall (the ceiling!) which is a great canvas for a dreamy landscape.

4. Make space for creativity. Does your child love to read, draw or have an extensive Lego collection? Don’t forget to give them room to tap into what they love most with spaces like reading nooks, art tables, Lego walls and organized toy storage.

5. Embrace easy updates, such as switching up pillows, bedding and rugs as your child’s interests change. Consider framing a favorite poster (yes, even that Fortnite one) or indulging their love of unicorns with a pillow or two.

Are you sensing the common theme here? Our general philosophy when designing children’s rooms is to create a neutral palette they can grow into with the more permanent items such as furniture, window treatments and paint color, while personalizing their spaces with their current interests in the soft finishes like bedding, rugs and art.
