6 Mistakes to Avoid When Setting Up Your Outdoor Space

As the days get warmer, we can’t wait to spend more time outdoors with our friends and family. But as with many things related to our homes, maximizing enjoyment and minimizing hassle takes a bit of work and some pre-planning. Here are five mistakes to avoid when setting up outdoor space for the summer.

1. Buying Low Quality Furniture

We can’t emphasize this enough — buying cheap products is going to be expensive! Outdoor furniture is constantly exposed to the elements, which is why inexpensive outdoor furniture will typically only last one season. Good quality outdoor furniture may have a slightly higher price tag, but it should be durable, easy to clean and last for years if cared for properly.

2. Not Paying Attention to the Materials Your Furniture is Made From

Every material, from teak, powder-coated aluminum to wrought iron, has its pros and cons, which is largely influenced by location and weather. For example, teak used in a rainy area will need regular maintenance and oiling, while aluminum may be too lightweight for places with high winds or get too hot to sit on in warm climates. When choosing your outdoor furniture, pay attention to where it will be placed (covered or not) and what materials will do best.

3. Not Using Furniture Covers

Good quality outdoor furniture can be expensive, so it’s critical to protect your investment. Waterproof covers will help keep furniture clean and dry, as well as help minimize any mold and mildew.

4. Using Indoor Furniture Outside

No matter how much you love a piece of furniture, unless it’s designed for outdoor use, save yourself from heartbreak and don’t use it outside. Outdoor furniture is specifically designed to resist the elements, as well as mold and rot. Selecting outdoor fabric is another must, as it is fade and stain resistant.

5. Forgetting About Storage

Similar to the inside of your home, the outdoor toys, cookware and decor all need a home when not in use. Consider buying multipurpose storage options like a coffee table or ottoman with storage inside or a storage console to go under the TV.

6. Using Rugs in Uncovered Spaces

Outdoor rugs are meant to be weather resistant, holding up to wind, rain and snow. But all too often we see outdoor rugs that are constantly exposed to the elements become moldy from heat and moisture. We recommend only using outdoor rugs in sheltered spaces, such as a covered patio or porch.
