How to Create a Beautiful and Functional Laundry Room
If you have children and pets, you most likely spend a significant amount of time in the laundry room. It’s a space that has to be functional, but why not elevate it and make it beautiful too?
At Wendy Smit Interiors, we approach the laundry room the same way we tackle the design of a kitchen or bathroom, taking into consideration cabinets, countertops and tile. But unlike a kitchen or bathroom, the laundry room is a space where we can have a little more fun with colors and patterns. Let’s face it, doing laundry is a necessary chore, so if we have to be in the space, why not make it a fun and happy space to be in?
Here are my top tips on creating a beautiful and functional laundry room:
Add a countertop: If you have front-loading appliances, a countertop installed over the washing machine and dryer helps anchor the space visually, and also creates a useful area to fold laundry. Durability is key, so consider quartz, or butcher block. If space allows, adding an island is a great functional option for additional storage and folding space.
Cabinets: There is no such thing as too much storage, and the laundry room has a lot of storage potential if the space is used wisely. Built-in cabinets look sleek, keep items out of sight, and also make the room look pulled together. If cabinets aren’t in the budget, we suggest using matching baskets to hide items like back stock, cleaning supplies and toilet paper away.
Wallpaper: Adding wallpaper is a perfect way to inject color and fun in a space. If you are afraid to commit to wallpaper, try installing it on a feature wall, or on the ceiling for a fun surprise.
4. Sink: A sink is a must in a laundry room for hand-washing delicates, treating stains or cleaning brushes from a craft project. Choose the biggest and deepest sink your space will accommodate. Farmhouse sinks are a great option for laundry rooms.
5. Drying Racks: Drying racks are essential, but can be bulky. If possible, installing a rod above the sink allows clothes to drip dry. Also consider space-saving wall-mounted drying racks.
